Project 4: Product campaign: radio spot, jingle, TV commercial, etc.

Objective: To create a product campaign to sell an American product or service in a region where the target language is spoken.

Length:  it will depend on what advertising media or tools you choose.  Go to instruction #4 for more information.

Instructions:

1. Think of a new product or service that an American company is developing to sell overseas.  Some ideas for your product: food, clothing, a book, a toy, a computer game or software program, a TV show, or a piece of furniture.

2. Decide where you will “sell” the product.  You may choose a place where you would like to live for a few months or years.

3. Do your research about the region.  You may use the CIA World Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html), Infoplease (http://www.infoplease.com/), GeoHive (http://www.xist.org/default1.aspx), or other site with statistics.

4. Create a slogan, a logo, and a brief description of your product or service. Next, decide what tools or media you will use to advertise your product or service. Pick two of the following:

  • Brochure = 2 or 3 pages long
  • Jingle = at least 5 sentences
  • Radio spot = 30 seconds to 1 minute long
  • TV commercial = 30 seconds to 1 minute long.  You will need a fake sample of your product, or a promotional article with the logo, a mug for example
  • Infomercial = 4 to 5 minutes long.  You may include fake interviews, offer the product for  $19.99 or the equivalent in the country’s currency.
  • Web site= two pages: main page with logo and description of product, and a  “about us” or “history” page.  If you have never produced a web page, write the pages using Word, then save it as an .html file.  If you are using the e-portfolio in Blackboard, you only need to add a blank item to your portfolio and add the information to it; you will not need to write two pages, only two sections in one page.
  • Newspaper or magazine ad = you need to use at least 4 sentences to describe the product or service.

5.   Create your advertising campaign tools and upload the files to your e-portfolio.

Advanced

Write a two-page paper in the target language to explain your campaign’s logo and slogan, why you chose a brochure instead of a TV commercial, for example.

Option:  for this project you may work in a group of three or four, but you will need to create at least five of the advertising tools and the two-page paper.
